Carl Schoedel Awarded NACE Urban Engineer of the Year

The National Association of County Engineers (NACE) awarded Carl Schoedel, P.E, the 2017 Urban County Engineer of the Year during its 2018 Annual Conference held April 22-26 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Schoedel is County Engineer (since 2003) and Director of Transportation (since 2005) for Kane County, Illinois. He joined Kane County in 1997 as Permit Engineer and Transportation Planner.

“Carl is an outstanding urban engineer possessing a unique blend of engineer, planner, and manager,” said Brian Keierleber, P.E., NACE President 2017-2018 and Buchanan County, Iowa, Engineer. “He has the ability to find consensus among political leaders to implement complex projects. His department has undertaken more than 306 engineering contracts, 220 construction contracts, 176 right-of-way parcel acquisitions, and completed construction projects totaling over $315 million.”

Under Carl’s leadership, his innovative funding initiatives have added $196 million in revenue not including bonds. The motor fuel tax was increased 2 cents in 2007, an impact fee program in 2004 collected fees from traffic generated by new development, and an RTA sales tax was increased by .5% in 2008.

One of his key accomplishments was the Stearns Road Bridge Corridor project, a 4.6 mile improvement extending from Randall Road in Kane County to the DuPage County line. The project received numerous regional and national awards, including the 2012 ACEC National Honor Award for Engineering Excellence and 2012 ARTBA-TDF Globe Award for Sustainability.

Since 2003, Carl has been a member of NACE and the Illinois Association of County Engineers. He is President of the Transportation Officials Division of the American Road and Builders Association (ARTBA).
