County Highway Engineer Position in Cook County, Minn.

Are you looking for a fulfilling and challenging leadership position in county engineering? Cook County is currently recruiting an experienced County Engineer to join our team of professionals.

The Cook County Highway Department provides a safe, efficient, coordinated transportation system that is responsive to community values and meets the needs of all users within resource limitations. The Highway Department is responsible for the management of capital infrastructure which consists of highways, bridges, buildings, and highway equipment.


  • Provide the vision, strategic planning and direction for the county transportation infrastructure. 
  • Provide and maintain a wide variety of public relations activities 
  • Coordinate with community agencies and commissions 
  • Provide regular information on roadway plans and projects 
  • Coordinate with other county departments 
  • Plan, develop, implement and supervise the operations and personnel of the Highway Department in the construction and maintenance of county roads, bridges, and ditches per approved engineering practices and in cooperation with local authorities. This includes three townships, the City of Grand Marais and Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council. 
  • Serve as the County Agricultural Inspector.


  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or construction engineering with a valid MN PE license is required. 
  • Minimum of 7 years professional civil engineering experience involving the design and oversight of civil engineering projects that includes a minimum of 3 years’ management/supervisory experience.


Commensurate with experience and education plus benefits including health insurance, LTD, life and PTO.

Salary range starts at $ $75,455.76(Step 1) - $ 102,185.16 (Step 15).
