Summary

Plans, organizes, schedules, supervises and monitors the work of maintenance crews engaged in the maintenance, repair, construction or operations of county roads, bridges, and drainage systems to assure areas are well maintained and safe. 
 
This position will be located in Kennewick or Prosser.

Examples of Duties

Coordinates, schedules and oversees all activities in area of assignment to assure that work is performed efficiently and according to appropriate guidelines, procedures and regulations.  Work supervised may include:  blading, repair and patching of roads, snow and ice control and removal, drainage structure repair, bridge repair, weed and brush control, grading, surfacing, paving and right of way work on construction projects.

Prioritizes and coordinates work with other departments, staff, and contractors to ensure timely completion of work projects. 

Assigns, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff; advises, assists and trains subordinates as necessary; initiates and implements disciplinary actions; conducts performance appraisal of subordinates; participates in the selection of new employees and makes recommendations regarding the transfer and termination of subordinate employees.

Develops, recommends and implements approved policies and procedures to assure effective and safe functioning of assigned activities and compliance with departmental standards and legal requirements.

Develops and administers a safety program for department activities. 

Calculates materials, supplies and equipment needs for assigned operations and prepares corresponding purchase orders. Includes orders for bulk materials, such as Liquid de-icer, Asphalt and Road salt. 

May assist in the development of bid specifications for equipment purchases and rentals and reviews final specifications to assure needs of road maintenance operations are met. 

Education and Experience

Two years coursework in Civil Engineer Technology or related field and five years of progressively responsible experience in road maintenance or construction, including three years of supervisory or lead responsibilities; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
