County Engineer Opening in Meeker County, Minnesota

Monthly Salary   $6,682.01 - $8,798.11 per month ($38.55 to $50.76 per hour)

Job Description

The primary objectives of this position are to provide the overall managerial direction, coordination, and professional engineering leadership in the planning, developing and administering of the County's public works programs. These programs include highway design, construction, operations, bridges, oversight of ditches, park systems, and facilities. Work is very complex and requires considerable judgement and experience in solving problems where conditions are continually changing.

Examples of Duties

1. Provide leadership and management to all divisions within the Highway department (engineering, maintenance, buildings & equipment, accounting) so that the programs of each division, including county and township road issues and transportation needs of the public, are accomplished.

2. Serve as County's chief representative regarding transportation-related matters.

3. Prepare for and participate in County Board meetings and other related meetings.

4. Prepare and present to the Meeker County Board of Commissioners for approval, an annual budget for the Meeker County Highway department. After approval, monitor and review all expenditures and funds as they relate to the budget. Road and Bridge annual budget exceeds $4.5 million.

5. Provide managerial leadership in the implementation of the County-wide pavement management system and coordinate other special projects, such as Transportation Plan Development.

6. Serve as Public Works Building Director.

7. Administer all personnel-related activities in the Highway Department.

8. Provide engineer oversight and supervision for County ditches.

Supervision Responsibilities

This position is responsible for indirect supervision of about 28 employees. The positions that report directly to the County Engineer are: Assistant County Engineer, Highway Maintenance Superintendent, Maintenance Shop Superintendent, Secretary/Accountant, Ditch Inspector, and Parks Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

2. Must be registered with the Minnesota State Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design as a professional civil or highway engineer.

3. 4-5 years of administrative and professional experience in civil engineering and highway operations. Supervisory experience is preferred.
